The Roman alphabet is much simpler…and moveable type as we know it…was invented by Johannes Gutenberg…around the year 1450, and it's still with us.…For all that time typeset fonts like Garamond…have been proportional, meaning each character…occupies its natural width just like your handwriting.…Easier to see with this smorgasbord of characters,…lower case, upper case, numerals,…punctuation, everything's a different width.…
The widest character is the upper case M,…the narrowest letter is the lowercase i,…and you can see how great the difference is.…One M is the standard of measure for a typeface.…
