- Many managers and bosses complain that millennials' in-person communication skills are abysmal. Much of this difficulty has been linked to childhood use of mobile devices to keep them quiet and entertained. These sophisticated toys provided a megadose of stimulation and distraction. These kids' brains were being rewired in a new way. Primed for change, novelty, excitement and constant arousal. Behavior around the use of devices has become a license for people from all generations to be more self-absorbed, and all too often to be dismissive to people around them. I've been working with, and teaching young designers for over 25 years. And what I see in this generation, more than all previous ones, is a high level of emotional fragility. The side effect of always being connected is a barrage of constant distraction and stimulation, and this creates a state of anxiety.
