Be calm and give options

- If you get to the point where you have no other option but to have the talk, stay calm and be ready to provide some options. Have your facts prepared about why this isn't working. Present them in a way that is not inflammatory no matter how frustrated or offended you may be. Ideally, this conversation should be in person or over the phone. An email is never a great option here. I would also practice ahead of time how the conversation might go. Make sure to include the option of some next steps or referral to another firm. Ending with the desire for a smooth transition is a powerful way to end strong, whether the client takes you up on it or not. When you break up with someone you've been dating, you may be able to stay friends afterward. When it comes to a client relationship, I think that should always be the goal.
