Visual storytelling vs. Info visualization
- [Instructor] Visual communication can drive meaning through two different approaches, visual storytelling and information visualization. In this chapter, I'll define these two approaches and provide examples of both to better clarify their meaning. Let's start with information visualization. Information visualization aims to convey meaning from information as quickly as possible. The primary focus is to educate the viewer, not persuade him or her to form a specific opinion. When used appropriately, information visualization lets the audience make discoveries and form their own conclusions, culls the essentials from big data sets, and often simplifies complex data sets. You'll find that information visualization is most often used in annual reports, political analysis, published studies and white papers, interactive micro sites, scientific journals, economic visualizations, and other publications that just focus on displaying the information for others to glean the meaning.
