Understanding font conflicts
- [Narrator] In any discussion of font management, you'll hear the term font conflict used a lot. But what exactly does this mean and what happens when there is a conflict? To understand, I think it helps to think of fonts as what they really are. Software that works in connection with your operating system and applications. And in order to work in connection with other software, fonts need to identify themselves with more than one name. There's the file name that's visible to you and there are also internal names that applications use to identify fonts for display in documents and in font menus. And a font conflict occurs when you activate two or more fonts with the same internal name. When this happens, you might not see any of the conflicting fonts appear in your font menus. And if you think about it, this is actually the best case scenario since it alerts you clearly that something's wrong and you need to investigate. Other times, an application might just choose one or the other…
