Screen printing: Underbase

Screen printing: Underbase

- [Instructor] When printers are screen printing on a shirt with color, they add an underbase. The underbase is white ink, and it creates a foundation for your artwork. It acts as a primer for the colors in your design. The underbase ensures that the colors in your design are vibrant, and that you won't have significant shifts in color. How does this affect you? Well, if you want your design to be printed on a colored shirt, you should know that, let's say if you have a design with three colors, the printer will have to make four screens. The fourth screen will be an underbase, so setup costs do go up. If you're on a tight budget, keep this in mind because having additional colors, as well as printing on a colored shirt will definitely affect the cost.
