- [Instructor] When consumer ebook sales first started to take off in 2007 and 2008, mostly as a result of the release of the first Kindle device, there were six main ebook formats available on the market. Mobipocket, EPUB, Microsoft.LIT, eReader PRC which was acquired by Barnes and Noble in 2009, Sony BBeB and PDF. In addition, there were some minor formats that had a following among the most extreme ebook early adapters. This mixed bag of ebook formats was summed down over the next few years as support for some of these formats went away and the major ebook retailers started to consolidate the two main formats, EPUB and Kindle. Sony switched from the BBeB format to EPUB in 2010 and then left ebook retail business completely in 2014. Barnes and Noble switched from supporting eReader to EPUB in 2009. And Microsoft stopped supporting the .LIT format altogether in 2011. PDF files were never broadly supported in the ebook retail system, but they remain a favorite format for free…
