- As designers, our stock in trade is symbolism. The word symbol is actually derived from the Greek word symbolon, meaning a mark or token. So it's not the actual thing, but something that represents it. We get that visually. The public sees a series of curved lines, and that symbolically means that there's wifi. Or we see a symbol of a man or a woman on a door and we know it's a restroom. Some symbols are a bit more vague. But, if we see a sun icon we could speculate it means light or warmth or summer or daytime. And the value of a symbol is frankly only as valuable as the strength of the meaning that it conveys. But some symbolism is developed to hide meaning. It's intended as code to be understood only by those who have permission. And almost like using an alphabet with an unfamiliar character, using a collection of these symbols together provides them an even greater depth of illegible significance. These badge-like marks could easily represent a secret society or a fraternal…
