- [Instructor] The Kindle format is the e-book format that's used on Amazon's Kindle devices. Many people are unaware that this format is actually much older than the Kindle devices themselves, and it has been through many different updates and changes over the years. In 2005, Amazon acquired a French e-book company called Mobipocket. The Mobipocket e-book format was one of the more popular e-book formats available in the nacent e-book market, and was desirable to Amazon because it was already very established, had decent features, and was not controlled by one of the large players in the space at that time, including Adobe, Microsoft, and others. Mobipocket had been around for a long time before the acquisition, and the format was already on version seven. Amazon used Mobipocket 7 as its foundational format for the Kindle when the groundbreaking device was released in 2007.
