Great portraits—all you need is your camera, a friend, and walking shoes

- I'm going to say the main thing that you got to know about shooting portraits is that the camera isn't the most important thing. There are at least two things that are way more important to take into account. Without these two other things, well your camera won't even matter. So first up, you got to wrap your head around the idea that most every portrait you take in one way or another is a photo of your subject's interaction with you, the photographer. It's true. I mean it's true unless you're shooting for more of a photojournalist point of view, in which case the idea is to show up with your camera, capture images of people exactly how they are at a given moment in a given place. You know what I mean? But right here, admittedly, we're talking in more commercial terms. Here the idea is to show people in ideal ways.
