- The first step when looking to advance your career is exploring opportunities within your company and one thing that can be a great asset is a mentor. The AIGA has a mentorship program which really underlines the value of mentorship, they have more people signing up than they can appoint mentors and there shows that there's great value in that mentorship relationship. I would encourage you to proactively seek a mentor, whether your company has a formal mentorship program or not. You can look both within your company and outside your company. So mentors take on many different roles; no doubt they can be a sounding board but as or more importantly they can be a source of insider knowledge on business and industry topics. They can give you valuable feedback on how to move your career forward and they can be a connector to key contacts.
