- There are two basic kinds of type. There's text, which is the small stuff we read, columns are print, books, magazines, most people barely notice it and there's display, which is a type that we see. It's the headlines, the packaging, the logos, building signs, apparrel, posters, all that, the big stuff. Text works, or should, in a very low key way. It runs in the background of your mind. Display type is opposite, it's out there in front getting attention. It's often the main visual on a piece. It sets the tone, the mood, the vibe, all that, or at least a lot of it. Most people when they think of type are probably thinking display type. It's a big part of most designs. There are thousands of display faces. It's readily available, some is free like Google Fonts. Most is very reasonably priced, especially for the value it brings, and it's just fun. There's so much artistry in it that you can learn a lot about design just by working with type.
