- Millennials spend most of each day engaging with ideas and one another through devices, rarely interacting in person or even speaking. Face-to-face conversations take time and patience. Interpersonal communication skills that used to have an opportunity to grow over many years are now being stunted. It concerns me that millennials are not getting enough practice with one of the most important skills needed in a multi generational professional environment, to engage confidently in a thorough and productive face-to-face conversation. Millennial responses are often misinterpreted by previous generations. What may sound like laziness to a boomer or a Gen Xer, is just casual or informal language to a millennial. When a millennial tries to be clever or culturally literate, it can be perceived by boomers or Gen Xers as smart ass or smug.
