Quick look: Saltwater restaurant

- I like the sign on the Saltwater Restaurant on Tomales Bay. Just paint on wood. No plastic, no neon, simple overhead light. Three things catch my eye. One, is the type is super distressed, just that old beat up maritime look, which is authentic, we're on the Pacific Ocean here. Two, is the type is set in unicase, which you can see here in restaurant. Lower case Ts, and U, and N, mixed in with upper case, that's a style choice. Three is that water is skinnier than the word salt, and that's because it's been shrunk from full size caps. It works here because it's so distressed, but when you're working with text you don't want to do that. You want to use true small caps instead which have stroke widths that match the lower case letters. Look for fonts that have them. An added benefit is that along with small caps you'll get old style numerals, which are the size of lower case numerals with ascenders and descenders, so they blend perfectly into a passage of text.
