Calculate permutations and combinations
- [Instructor] When you offer multiple ways to customize an item, such as a pizza with toppings or ice cream scoops in a bowl, you might want to calculate the number of ways that those items can be combined. In this movie I'll show you how to calculate combinations where the order of items doesn't matter and permutations where the order does matter. Like I said, there are two different ways that you can look at how items are combined. In permutations the order does matter. For these calculations, at least in the base case, I will assume that I have 10 items and the number chosen will be three. And I can either allow or disallow repetition for combinations. But for permutations we'll assume that we don't allow selection with replacement. In other words, when something is selected then it will not be put back into the mix. So we have the number of items as 10 and the number chosen is three. So how many different ways can you select three items from ten where order matters? We will use…
