What are OpenType features?

- [Narrator] More often than not, the final step in creating your glyphs file will be adding OpenType features. The OpenType font format has several great aspects. Cross-platform compatibility is one. Extensive character sets are another, but the most exciting might be the ability to program behaviors into a font. So what does it mean for a typeface to behave? In some respects, it's like asking a child to behave. For instance, if a designer or layout program asks an open type typeface to combine the letters ff and j or ff and p into a single form, the typeface behaves accordingly. Ligatures, the combinations of two or more characters into a single form are one open type behavior or feature and there are many more. There are two standard ligatures in most fonts. The fi and fl, they exist to deal with collisions with the overhang with the f in standard text spacing.
