Ligatures

- [Instructor] A ligature is a single glyph that joins together two or more letter forms. The two standard ligatures in fonts are the fi and fl ligatures. Standard ligatures appear by default in programs like InDesign, they're an OpenType behavior. The typeface knows that the program expects standard ligatures and it behaves accordingly. Non-standard ligatures, or discretionary ligatures may exist in the font, but they need to be turned on by the user in order to show up in text. Creating standard and discretionary ligatures in Glyphs is really easy. Let's make the fi and fl ligatures for this font. Since they're standard, they have standard names, fi and fl. So I'll create two new glyphs by clicking on the plus sign down here at the bottom. Then I'll click on the caption and rename the first one fi, hit Return. On the caption for the second one click fl and Return. And now we have the glyphs and if we select the cells and go to the Glyph menu and choose Make Component Glyphs the…
