Basic kerning

- [Instructor] Once you've established the fit of your italic font and tested it thoroughly by setting words, you're going to notice that there are still certain combinations that look off. For instance the cap Y and the lower case O, drift apart from each other. And the lowercase F and the question mark collide. These combinations can't be fixed through fitting, they require kerning. First, we're going to round up the usual suspects. They're common kerning pairs that have been handed down to us from the days of metal and phototype setting. If you want to keep the kerning of your italic to a minimum and you probably should, just address these pairs and call it a day. But if you're going to persist, and I'm guessing you will, keep these as your guiding principles. First, kern completely or not at all. Once you begin kerning beyond the historic pairs, don't leave the job half done. If you decide you must kern pairs like the V and the period, then you must address the F and the period…
