- [Instructor] Every profession has it's own language, a vocabulary spoken by practitioners that let's the other members of the tribe know that you are one of them. Typography is no different. They're not feet. They're serifs. And it's not that hanging part. It's a descender. And that's what this section is about. Pay attention, and by the end, you should be talking like a typographer. Letters are made up of a limited number of fundamental elements called strokes. The word stroke refers to time when letters were drawn by hand. Stroke with a pen onto parchment or paper. The four basic strokes are the vertical, the diagonal, the curve, and the horizontal. And here's how the same strokes look when they're made calligraphically. Note the thick and thin variation. Strokes combine to make letters. For example, the capital R contains three types of strokes. And, again, the same strokes but calligraphic.
