Join Carrie Dils for an in-depth discussion in this video Using the exercise files, part of WordPress and Genesis: Customizing Themes (2014).
If you're a member of Lynda.com, you have access to the exercise files used throughout this course. For the course, I've downloaded these files to my desktop and will reference them in some of the lessons. Inside this folder, there's a folder for each chapter that contains exercise files. Each of these exercise files contains any custom code used during that lesson. You can use the code snippets in these files to try out some of the customizations for yourself. In this course, I go over several functions that can interfere with each other when all used together.
As a result, for each lesson, I start from scratch with the Genesis sample theme. If you're proceeding from one movie to the next, be sure to reset your theme to its default state. Let's get started.
- Setting up your development environment
- Understanding the child theme template structure
- Working with the Genesis loop
- Working with actions
- Editing theme styles
- Making commonly requested customizations
