Join Damian Allen for an in-depth discussion in this video Working with the Timeline, part of GarageBand '09 Essential Training.
So let's take a look now at the Magic GarageBand Timeline. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see that the song is broken into sections, starting with an Intro, then a Verse, then a Chorus, and so on. Select one of these regions with your mouse, and then if you click the Play button, GarageBand will play through just that selected selection. This is perfect, if you're playing along with the band, and want to rehearse a specific section over and over. Another easy way to navigate around is to grab hold of the triangular playhead and drag it to a new location in the song. Notice how when the playhead reached the end of the yellow region, it jumped back to the start, repeating that part of the song so you can keep practicing. Shift+Click to expand the portion of the song that gets repeated.
You'll see now if I drag the playhead that it moves across the two sections. But when it gets to the final end of the yellow section, it wraps around and starts playing Verse 1 again. (Music playing.) And you can Shift+Click one of these sections again to remove it from the repetition. If you want to go back to previewing the entire song, click the switch that's currently set to Snippet and change it back to Entire Song. The yellow highlight disappears, and now GarageBand will play through every single section of the Timeline.
(Music playing.) That's pretty much it for navigation. Up next, we'll take a look at how to create a custom mix of the instruments on your stage.
