- [Brenda] Hi, I'm Brenda Romero, and I've been making games now for over 30 years. It's absolutely my passion, and I'm glad you've joined me for this course. In this, Section Two, we're going to be taking a look at game systems, chance in games, and strategy in games. Now, every game has mechanics that allows players to take actions, whether it's rolling a pair of dice, or clicking a button to sell resources for money, whether it's an auction, jumping, fighting, whatever it is, that's the meat of game play.
And when multiple mechanics are combined together, we start to see gameplay systems, like character systems, or combat systems, and that's where we begin to see the dynamics of play. And that's what we're going to get into here. In this second course on game design, I'm going to present you with a detailed look at game systems and mechanics. We'll start by going over some common game systems that you may be familiar with. Then, we'll talk about the important items to consider when implementing your game systems.
And we'll take a more detailed look at character systems in particular. We'll also break down chance and skill and the roles that they play in your game. So, let's get to it.
