Join Justin Seeley for an in-depth discussion in this video Working with brushes, part of GIMP Essential Training (2012).
GIMP, just like any other image editing application, has built-in brushing capabilities,…and in this movie, I am going to be discussing the different brushes that we have available to us.…So, I am going to first start off by creating a new document.…I am just going to choose 1024 × 768, and we will hit OK,…and that creates a brand new document for me.…And you'll notice in the tools panel, I actually have three different brushing type tools.…I have a Pencil Tool, which, as you can see by the description, gives you a hard edge…painting using a brush.…Then you've got the Paintbrush Tool, which paints a smooth stroke using a brush, and…then of course you've got the Airbrush Tool, which paints using a brush with variable pressures.…
And so those three are the basic brush tools we have at our disposal.…We also have something called an Ink Tool, and we'll talk about that in its own specific…movie a little bit later on.…But for now, I am just going to work with the brushes here for just a moment, and show…

Q: This course was updated on 09/04/2014. What changed?
A: We added a movie that explains why you can't achieve some of the effects shown in these tutorials in the Windows version of GIMP. This is due to the fact some plugins have been removed since this course was recorded. Watch the "IMPORTANT: Before we get started" to learn more about how these changes will impact you.
