Join Justin Seeley for an in-depth discussion in this video Sharpening images, part of GIMP Essential Training (2012).
Now it's time to talk about sharpening images,…and this is something that every person who takes a photograph at some point in time wants to know how to do.…They want to know, how do I make my images sharper?…Well unfortunately, there is no real way to sharpen an image in any image editing application.…There is no magic CSI enhance button that you can just press, and it turns a blurry image…into a tack sharp photo.…It's just not possible.…What sharpening actually is, and what you need to understand about sharpening is the fact…that most of the sharpening commands that you find in image editing applications are…simply going to analyze your photo, and look for edges between light and dark pixels, and…increase the contrast between those two areas to make it appear as if there is more detail…there than it really is.…
The problem with sharpening is the fact that when you do this, you both lose pixel data,…and introduce noise into your photographs, …so you have to be very careful with this.…I think one of the most common things that people do to their photographs is they oversharpen…
