- Let's take a look at the options for saving your work in GIMP's native file format. And, when we talk about GIMP's native format, we're talking about files with an extension of xcf. And I'll just double click one of the items in the templates dialogue to create a new file. The letters xcf stand for Experimental Computing Facility, which is the place where GIMP itself was first developed. If you're familiar with Adobe Photoshop, you can think of xcf files as something like psd files in Photoshop. Naturally, xcf files support all of the features that you can add to a GIMP file. Some other applications also support xcf files, and you can check this Wikipedia page for a list of programs that can open xcf files. Just scroll down, and check out the Software support section. Notice that major commercial applications like those from Adobe and Core are not on the list.
