What is 3D scanning?

- So what is 3D scanning? 3D scanning is the translation of a physical object into a 3D model representation of that object on a computer. Now, if you're here for this class, you may be wondering about reverse engineering, but the process of creating a 3D model is not only used for reverse engineering, but also for artistic purposes. There are plenty of artists out there who have their sculptures or their artwork scanned in order to recreate them, in order to record them, or for lots of different purposes. A funny story, we once scanned somebody's anatomy, actually they turned their neck and we scanned the lines that their muscles made in their neck. And we took a little tiny piece of that and shrunk it down and turn those into earrings. So that person could wear their anatomy, their specific shape of their neck on their ears.
