- [Instructor] For an illustrator, references is key. Reference refers to real world pictures or items that are similar to what you want to create. Reference is not meant to be traced but taken as inspiration to guide your decisions as you draw. Using reference grounds your art and reality which adds believability especially to more abstract or fantasy designs. A great example of this is how "Blade Runner" concept artists, Syd Mead, was a trained industrial designer. That means he learned how to draw real cars and used that foundational knowledge to imagine fantasy cars like the Spinner design from the movie. And that's why it's so successful. Another great aspect of reference is that it expands your imagination to new ideas or concepts you weren't even aware of. You can capture reference yourself using a camera or by visiting a museum.
