- [Narrator] "Caelum certet patet ibimus ilac." These words were written by the Roman poet, Publius Ovidius Naso, more commonly known as Ovid in his work, "The Metamorphosis." It means "The sky is open before us "and that way we shall go." From the dawn of time, humankind has look upwards and wondered what wisdom can be found in the stars. The sky, coupled with human curiosity, has been the source of innovations in navigation, timekeeping and calendars that track the seasons. From Stonehenge to the Pyramids at Giza, throughout history, we've studied the stars and attempted to apply that study to useful endeavors. The Greeks were among the first to notice that not everything in the night sky is a star. The ancient stargazers soon realized something different. Stars that do not shimmer and that moved erratically compared with their Milky Way galactic backdrop, they called these phenomena planets which in Greek means wanderer.
