- The best investment advice I could give you about investing in real estate is to buy low and sell high. But how do you know if home prices are high or low? Because homes are the biggest investment of the majority of Americans, there's been a push to invent a better mouse trap when it comes to tracking home prices. And one of the most closely watched indicators in recent years is the S&P Case-Shiller Index. It only focuses on prices. Not sales, not starts, not inventories, just the cold, hard cash you could get for your home. The S&P Case-Shiller Index is a monthly indicator that was developed, in part, by the Nobel Prize-winning economist, Robert Shiller, along with the Professor Carl Case.
