- Studying can be one of the most stressful and busy, yet rewarding times of your life. And when you graduate, it's important to take a breath and be proud of what you've accomplished. Whether you've graduated college, high school, culinary school or an apprenticeship, the process of finding a paying job is the same, a lot of hustle, a lot of stress, and when you finally do have money coming in, it's time to celebrate, right? Maybe not so fast. The first few years of your working life really can set the tone for your financial health long term, so here's a checklist to make sure you start out right. The first thing to do is to build a very basic financial picture. List all the income you expect to make in a month. Use your after tax, take home pay, not your salary divided by 12. You should be able to find a tax calculator for your location online. Then, take between 10 and 20%. This is you paying yourself first. This habit alone will help your financial health enormously.
