- A new start is usually a great thing. And there's few feelings as exciting as starting out in a fresh new job. So what should you keep in mind the next time you change jobs? Do the math. Take the time to really understand the compensation in your new role. Don't just look at the salary either. Look at your net take-home pay as you may end up with less money than you thought you'd get. Why? Because you may have moved into a higher tax bracket. Also, quantify how much your benefits are worth and take advantage of employee benefits that are offered to you, especially those that will help you save for retirement or reduce your taxes. Resist temptation. With a fancy new title comes the opportunity for fancy new car, clothes, house, right? Wrong. Keeping up with the Jones is a fallacy. There's a tendency to try and look and act the part as you climb the ladder, but resist the temptation to overspend. Revisit your budget.
