The foundations of video editing

- We're surrounded by it, potentially consuming hours of it and it absolutely loves bandwidth. Yes, I'm talking about video. But that final production that's usually displayed before your eyes involves preparation, post-work, and feedback before it's distributed. Well, the good ones at least. In this movie, we'll talk about the cycle of work as it relates to post. Along the way, we'll look at the steps involved and what to expect in Final Cut Pro X. So when we start to talk about the foundations of video editing, we're really just going to break down editing into three subcategories. Those subcategories include your ability to ingest or import material into your post-production software being Final Cut Pro X. From after importing and ingesting, we'll start organizing things, which is also part of this stage. And then what we're going to do is move to the edit stage. That's where you're going to assemble your story, where you're going to put everything together into a timeline. During the edit stage, a ton of things are going to happen in basically subcategories and that includes adding effects and transitions, adding color to your piece, working with sound design. And then when your piece is finished, all we're going to do is share it as Final Cut likes to say or export those files. Now, to get a better overview of the Final Cut ecosystem and how it works with these three foundations of video editing, I have this lovely little chart for us here. So looking at the import, edit, and share stages first of all, importing, we've talked about ingesting from a DSLR camera or basically a memory card and even taking material from a archive source which you can create in Final Cut Pro X and importing that in as well. You take that stuff and also organization is a huge part of this step. Then we talk about editing. And editing, you first of all assemble a rough cut and eventually you start to fine-tune that cut in a number of ways using various trimming tools. From there, we add titles, transitions, effects, to spice up our footage and then even do some color correction techniques. After that, we've got to share our video. And this all depends on where you're going to distribute it. Maybe for instance you'll want to have one copy of your footage for your computer by exporting a master. You'll then want to do several different destinations for maybe having someone view that on a mobile device. And even expand your delivery possibilities by using Compressor, which is another application in the Final Cut Pro X ecosphere. But there you have it. Those are the fundamentals and the foundation building blocks of video editing. And I want you to keep this in mind as we begin our journey of creating our first video.
