An editor's thoughts on trimming

- [Instructor] Just some thoughts as I watch editors work here in Final Cut 10. The magnetic timeline initially gives them a lot of frustration, and it's just the idea that if you switch to the position tool, let me undo this, p for the position tool, when I move stuff, it overwrites what's there, undo, versus the arrow tool, which swaps elements. Secondary story lines, moving the pin is just a command option click, and it moves the pin, in this case, where I have this bridging these two clips. I'll hit command option. It's now attached to the second clip, so when I grab the first clip, it continues to overlap, based on that second clip. This is really just a great way to work when you need this to be connected to the secondary item. The trim tool is super powerful. You barely need it, though, because of how it works, and because the trim tools are so powerful, I find myself using the blade tool less. It's still b for blade, and I really love this idea of trimming to the playhead as well as trimming the start and end. These become very, very quick ways to trim. And if you're coming, say, from an avid, you're going to love double clicking on eclipse edit and using the precision editor to be able to see and really hear what's on either side of your trim, as well as double clicking to close it up.
