- The final option I want to cover with using preexisting music is production music, otherwise known as stock music or library music. This music is comprised of thousands of songs, all recorded in hundreds of different styles and context, mostly by work-for-hire musicians. This music is owned and distributed by various music libraries and lent out to individuals and commercial entities alike, for use in various television, radio, film, and other video and audio projects. Now, production music can be a great option for budget-conscious productions. It can also be a nice hybrid approach for productions that want to employ a composer for the main score, but use stock music for secondary music cues. There are even major productions that have chosen to use production music for their main theme and important cues. Many of which you probably recognize from this list.
