- Hi everyone, it's Ashley Kennedy back with another installment of Video Post Tips Weekly, the Post-Production Tutorial Series from lynda.com. This week's topic is Speedy Montage Creation: Top and Tail Editing Made Simple. With montage, you edit a series of separate shots together in a strategic way, either to tell a story, or to depict an idea, or to show a change over time. There are many different types of montage, and it's a very common editing technique. Some montage is quite complex and extremely well planned out with regard to how it was shot, whereas some other montage is a bit more basic, just showing the essential parts of each shot to get the main idea across. If your strategy gravitates towards the latter, there's a really great technique that you can use called top and tail editing, which involves stringing together many long clips and then very quickly extracting the unwanted portions of those clips, which results in the core parts of each shot remaining.
