- Now that we've talked about how important music is in film and about the different types and strategies for film score, I want to bring up a few observations about instrumentation. Let's first talk about how different instruments convey different types of emotions, tones, and messages. Now, a lot of what we'll discuss here are broad generalizations since instruments can do so many things in so many different contexts. But at least we can start a brief dialogue on how instrumentation can be connected to the human emotion. String instruments are very versatile. They can represent emotions like sorrow, reflection, regret. (slow string music) Or strength, power, and courage. (dramatic orchestral music) Or fear, intenseness, and foreboding. (sharp string music) Or love and romance. (slow melodic orchestral music) And along those same lines, woodwind instruments can evoke many of those same types of emotions depending on various factors.
