- [Voiceover] Once the flurry of filmmaking innovation in the late 1800s took off, in which the non-fiction film market was represented by short actuality films, the narrative film soon took off as storytellers began to learn how film could be used to creatively translate the classic human story onto screen. But also during this time people remained aware that the real human story and the story of places, and events, and historical figures, were also important to capture, and so documentaries, or actuality films, continued to grow and evolve as well. In the early part of the 20th century, filmmakers began taking the non-fiction film in many different directions, both filmically and geographically. First, the travelogue film, or scenic, as they were often called, became quite popular, giving audiences a peek at famous places all over the world, inviting them into places and cultures they would have otherwise never seen in their lifetimes.
