The components of depth of field

- We need to talk about depth of field because this is one of the areas of technical expertise that the cinematographer has to master. There will be an area in front of the lens which will be acceptably sharp. We call that the zone of focus. Closer to the lens than that, and further from the lens than that, the image will be softer than is acceptable to us. The amount of the area in front of the lens, which will be in focus, will depend on a number of factors. Focal length, f-stop, and the size of the sensor. Notice I said f-stop and not T-stop. F-stop is the diameter of the iris opening divided by the focal length of the lens. In other words, this is a measurement of the size of the opening of the iris. T-stop is a measurement of the amount of light collected by a lens. We use this measurement when we determine exposure. I mention this because you will run into lenses in which there are two numbers on the iris ring. One will be the T-stop, the other will be the f-stop. T-stop will…
