The benefits of scripting before you shoot

- I know a lot of people who shoot nonfiction videos without a script. They might just have some notes and some scenes that they want to get. And I am amazed by this because I can't imagine going out into the field and shooting without some kind of document, some kind of blueprint for what I'm trying to accomplish in the edit. So I'm a big fan of scripting before you shoot. That doesn't mean you're going to have everything turn out exactly how you thought it would on paper particularly if you're working with real people on camera. But at least it gives you some kind of guidepost. And I'll tell you what I found to be some of the real benefits of scripting before you shoot. First you can really maximize your impact because you're much more laser-focused on why different components of the script are there and how they connect to the things we've talked about: motivating viewers and what the goals are for the project.
