- Now obviously we plug our lighting units into a source of power but our cable should never be tight like this. You should always have enough cable to reach to the floor and to wherever you're plugging it in. There should also be some extra slack in the cable in case you have to move the lamp. The cable should always lie flat on the floor so people don't trip over it as well. Now if your light's cable isn't long enough to reach the plug you can always add a stinger. What is a stinger? A stinger is just a movie extension cord. We call them stingers, it's a slang word, it goes way back to the early days of electricity probably. But suffice to say, any movie set in America people are going to call them stingers. Now these are professional stingers with enough capacity for the amount of power you're drawing. These can handle up to 20 amps of power which is 2,000 watts of light. But even if you're just using extension cords like this from the hardware store you should still treat them…
