Join Bill Dill for an in-depth discussion in this video Three roles of the cinematographer, part of Learning Cinematography: 2 Working on Set.
- The cinematographer has three roles. Cinematographer is an artist, a manager, and a technician. Those last two have veto power over the first. Because if you don't have the management skills to get your crew and equipment to the right place at the right time or the technical command of the medium, your artistic vision won't find its way onto the screen. Now, keep this priority in mind.
When you create compositions in front of your camera, make sure that you have an emotional connection to that. Make sure that you feel something personal about the images that you're creating so that the audience will as well. Don't make artistic schedules. But also, don't make technical compositions.
