Quality lighting

- We've talked about the basic tasks that lighting has to perform. But these things are generic and don't refer to its use in any particular story. Now we need to define what exactly you want lighting to do for you in your movie. What I'm talking about is referred to as the quality of the light. Here are some principles to keep in mind. Quality lighting does three things different from basic lighting. First, it tells the story. I guess that sounds obvious. But it might come as a surprise that I often have students come to me to talk about the lighting of their movie and then start right away talking about lighting units and color and diffusion and style before saying a word about the story and what the lighting needs to accomplish in the movie. When I start asking questions about things that aren't clear to me, like, "What's your film about? "What does the protagonist really want? "What's really in their way?"
