Picture the light in your mind

- Every cinematographer will develop their own approach to lighting. There are some underlying fundamentals, however, that all successful approaches have in common. In this chapter, I'd like to talk about a few of those concepts. We'll start by talking about pre-visualizing the look you want to create. Lighting is the task where the cinematographer has the greatest impact on the look of a movie. In order to light a movie well, the look has to harmonize with the vision of the film articulated by the director. It also has to connect with the other aspects of the design of the movie, such as the production design, wardrobe, and makeup and hair. This requires in-depth discussions. We talked about that in our chapter about pre-production planning; however, lighting is also where the cinematographer has the greatest autonomy.
