How much light do you need?

- One of the first considerations in lighting, is knowing how much light do you need to light a scene. How much light you've put on the scene is a basic fact of physics. Without knowing this fact, consistency is a whole lot harder to maintain. I'm drawing a distinction between how much light you need, and how much light you actually use. How much light you need is most an aesthetic and a technical consideration. The camera has a need for a certain amount of light, that sets the minimum amount of light you need. The amount of light you use is a matter of judgement, and determines a lot about the look of the film. Typically, we try to use as little light as we have to, to create the look we want. What I'm trying to advise against is lighting a scene without knowing the minimum amount of light the camera needs, or how to light to that minimum level. If you don't know these two things, your tendency will be to over-light, in order to avoid under-exposure. When you over-light, your scenes…
