- Now, LEDs employ a newer technology, and they use more sophisticated electronics than some of the more established lighting units out there. So when they were introduced into the imaging world more than a decade ago, they were more expensive. As the designs improve, costs are coming down. And as with many types of photo/video lighting equipment, once a brand proves to be a success, there often comes a lot of alternatives to that brand available to the consumer. So how do we decide whether to invest in LED lighting, and how do we decide whether to buy top of the line or something more modestly priced? I have two examples here of panels on the lower priced end and the more expensive priced end. This is a Rosco 1x1 LitePad. This is a LitePanels Astra 1x1. There's about $800 of difference between the two units. For every increase in costs, there has to be a quality advantage of some kind. So you wanna consider the pros and cons of both.
