Building and utilizing the Chimera

- A chimera is a great tool to create a soft light source which can be very flattering. This light kit is actually called an arri softbank kit and the softbank in question is the chimera itself. If it were a mythical beast it might be pronounced kimera but in Hollywood we almost always say chimera. Now it goes on this light. This is a 1000 watt open faced light. It's called open faced because as you can see there's no lens on the front of it. You can look right in there and see the light bulb. So if I point it away from you, and turn it on, you can see it's a nice bright light but it doesn't have a great quality. Like the shadows it casts are kind of double shadows, they're not very good because the filament of the light itself is the shape of the source so that's the shape of the shadow it's casting and you can't get a good hard cast. And this hard light is very unflattering but it has a lot of power and that's what we need to push through our chimera which is a little tent of…
