Understanding field types

There are two steps that you have to take before you can define fields in your FileMaker database. First, you must decide which fields you need in your database and which table they belong to. Then you must determine what field type each field must be. That's important because, if you go into File, Manage, and Database, and click on one of the tables, here I'm in the Customers table in the Fields tab, you'll see that, by adding a field, which is as easy as just typing something in, before you can actually create it, you have to pick a type. And so here are all the different field types that are available to you, and you have to know which one is appropriate to the field that you're defining.
