- [Instructor] NFC stands for near field communication. It allows phones, tablets, laptops, or other devices to easily share data with other NFC-equipped devices or tags. This evolved from radio frequency identification, which you may know of as RFID. RFID, of course, is behind those security scan cards that you use to get into the office every day or even that help you bypass the toll booth on your morning commute. NFC is very much like RFID, but NFC is limited to communication within about four inches, and most people consider NFC's small radius a major security benefit. That's probably the reason why you see NFC has taken off as a secure alternative to credit cards like Apple Pay. The technology can be used for more than just buying coffee at Starbucks, however.
