- [Voiceover] Now we've discussed creating static value lists that contain a preset range of values, but there's another way to populate the values in a value list and that's called creating a Dynamic Value List. In these cases we would use what's called Custom Values. Dynamic Value List are automatically created on the fly based on the data that's already in a field. Specifically it's the field's Index. You might not know that every field has an index, that's how file maker makes searching go so fast. And you can see this by clicking into a field and hitting Command + I on Mac or Control + I on Windows. This is the index of the field. So indexes are created by File Maker for various purposes like sorting or creating relationships, because File Maker needs to take an inventory of all the unique values that are stored in a field throughout the entire database.
