Join Cris Ippolite for an in-depth discussion in this video Touring the new FileMaker WebDirect interface, part of FileMaker 14 Platform New Features.
- FileMaker WebDirect is an innovative web technology that runs custom solutions directly in a web browser on a desktop or tablet mobile browser with no web programming skills necessary. It's web publishing as simple as it gets. The only requirement for being able to share your solution in FileMaker WebDirect, is that your solution has the FM WebDirect extended privilege activated on at least one active account. So you'll see here, in this particular case, we have two files that meet that requirement.
So after logging into FileMaker WebDirect, the first thing that you'll notice is the new launch center that we see in FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Pro Advanced, and FileMaker Go in the 14 platform. The FileMaker WebDirect launch center provides consistent entry points to your solutions regardless of what technology you're using to access them. It has the same support for Tile Views allowing us to see the larger views of our solution icons, or if we have a lot of solutions in WebDirect, we can choose the List View, allowing us to see more of the solution icons on-screen at a time.
Or we can even use the search box to type in a value which will then filter the display to only show the solution icons that match that value. Once you select one of the solutions, the first thing you'll notice is a completely redesigned toolbar. The toolbar even automatically adapts to the screen size of your desktop or mobile tablet device. So I've got an example on-screen here, where I have the same solution being accessed in FileMaker WebDirect. One of them has a full-sized browser window, that shows all the different buttons and navigation elements and then the one in front has a constrained toolbar, so what's interesting about this responsive toolbar design, is that you'll see here, instead of having room for a plus and minus to add or remove records, it combines together into one menu that has a New Record and Delete Record option.
It also has the Sort Records here. So all three of those buttons, when the space is constrained, become a submenu. The same thing is true when I don't have enough room to show our search bar for quick find. I can simply click on quick find. It shows me the quick find bar as well as the ability to Enter Find Mode or repeat my last find. The FileMaker menu in FileMaker WebDirect has also been redesigned. If you're familiar with FileMaker Go for 14, you'll see that it's essentially the same menu, in order to provide consistency regardless of how your users are accessing your solution.
It has the same type of sliding menu interface, which optimized condensed space, and provides your users with a nice subtle animated menu experience. It also has the same record management window, which gives you all the information about your found sets all in one interesting graphic display. And then inside your solution, you'll notice a couple of things. You should know that the entire FileMaker 14 platform includes improvements in performance when dealing with very large value lists and drop-downs and or pop-ups.
There are many behind-the-scenes engineering improvements in FileMaker WebDirect that all add up to some really interesting user experience improvements. First of all, FileMaker WebDirect is now 25% faster when opening most web-optimized layouts for desktops and mobile tablets. You'll also realize an increased concurrent connection limit that goes from 50, now doubling it, to 100 concurrent connections. And likely the biggest benefit to the performance improvements is the support now for mobile tablet browsers.
All you need is your existing FileMaker skillset, and you can go from creating a solution that was available on your desktop, to now one that's available on desktop or tablet browsers. With improvements in FileMaker 14, sharing your solution via browsers just got more powerful, and your audience just got much larger.
